Manutd set to land Berbatov with 28mil bid

Manchester United are expected to seal the signing of unsettled Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov for £28 million in the next 24 hours, which would be a powerful retort to Chelsea captain John Terry's suggestion that Sir Alex Ferguson's side had "peaked".

It is understood that the Premier League and European champions have already tabled a bid of £23m for Berbatov while Tottenham have been holding out for £30m, but an offer of £28m is likely to swing the deal. Tottenham refused to comment on the future of the Bulgarian, who had returned to training at the club having expressed his desire to move to Old Trafford.
United's approach was stepped up after they were rebuffed in their attempts to capture Spain star David Silva. Julio Llorente, the striker's agent, disclosed that a bid had been turned down by Valencia. The European champions are offering Berbatov a deal worth more than £80,000 per week as the 27-year-old seeks to leave Tottenham. Despite guaranteeing Uefa Cup football this season through their Carling Cup triumph, Spurs could manage only an 11th-place Premier League finish. Berbatov, who has scored 46 goals in his two years at Tottenham, covets a chance in the Champions League.
His signing would send out a strong message to United's rivals. Terry claimed that while his club could "raise the bar", United did not have another level to reach. Describing last season's two-point gap, Terry said at the Premier League launch: "I think Sir Alex realises we weren't too far away from them at the very top of their game. I don't think they've got another level to go to
."
